A Safe Place presents actor, speaker, and author April Hernandez Castillo at Nantucket High School on February 6 as part of our youth prevention and community outreach.
April is best known for her role as “Eva” in the hit movie Freedom Writers, starring Hillary Swank. She has also starred in television shows such as Law & Order: SVU, Person of Interest, Dexter and New Amsterdam.
Using her platform as an actor and speaker has allowed April to be able to share her personal story of resilience and redemption with a wide array of audiences nationally and internationally. From growing up in the Bronx to being in an abusive relationship, to almost taking her own life, April’s story is one of inspiration and overcoming the odds. A Safe Place is honored to be able to bring April to the Nantucket community this February for a day of impact through storytelling and connection.
April will host an afternoon keynote presentation exclusively for Nantucket High School students during their school day on Tuesday, February 6.
She will also host a parent workshop the evening of Tuesday, February 6 at 6:00 PM in the Nantucket High School auditorium as part of her Parents Against Violence Education (P.A.V.E.) program. This interactive workshop will focus specifically on educating parents in how to identify the signs of abuse and the best ways to combat intimate partner violence via awareness and prevention efforts. This event is free to parents/guardians of Nantucket High School students as well as teachers and faculty. Additionally, we welcome parents and staff from any of Nantucket’s private schools.
Registration is appreciated but not required.
If you would like to register, please reach out to Rachel at rachel@asafeplacenantucket.org or by calling 508.228.0561.
